A fine pair of antique Italian oil on panel paintings Nature Morte of two pairs of gamebirds, in the Trompe-l'oeil style, by Michelangelo Meucci (1840-1909), signed & dated Firenze 1873.
Trompe l'oeil is an artistic term for the highly realistic optical illusion of three-dimensional space and objects on a two-dimensional surface. Trompe-l'œil, which is most often associated with painting and it tricks the viewer into perceiving painted objects or spaces as real. This pair of paintings depict a pair of birds in each frame hanging from a pine panel, and due to the Trompe L'oeil style they have a three dimensional feel.
Each painting is signed lower left & lower right "M. Meucci Firenze 1873", each painting is inset into an oval gilded rabbet channel & an incised carved panel around the oval frame. There is a further rectangular gilded frame and then a carved frame with a rusticated free branch style surround. Both paintings are in excellent condition, this interesting & whimsical pair of antique paintings are ready to hang on your wall.
Michelangelo Meucci (1840-1909), was an artist active in Florance Italy and was known for his abilities in painting Still lives, nature morte and bird paintings, he very often employed the technique of Trompe-l'œil in French (Deceive the Eye). Meucci's paintings are housed in some of the most prestigious galleries on the planet including; Musee d'Orsay Paris, Georgian State Museum, Museums of Florence, and many others.
