A very fine quality antique Chippendale style plum mahogany game/console table, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1910.
The table is of demi-lune form when closed & opens to form a full circle, the table top having beautiful 'plum pudding' grained mahogany,
a highly prized pattern found within certain mahogany wood, particularly Honduran mahogany. This figuring resembles large, swirling drips or blotches in the grain, reminiscent of the fruit and suet mixture in a traditional plum pudding. The edge of the table is carved with a gadrooned foliate design, the table opens on brass butterfly shaped hinges to reveal a green baize playing surface. The table skirt also with figured plum pudding mahogany the rear of the table with twin gate-legs to provide very stable support to the table top when open. The table is raised on four very elegantly carved cabriole legs, finely & deeply carved to the shoulder with acanthus shaped C scrolls & shell carvings to the center, the legs terminate to substantial platform claw feet.
The table makes a great entry or console table and fun to bring out and open any play your favorite game, it will accommodate four players when open. The condition and quality of this table is outstanding, solid & substantial gauge & made of the very best materials. We sold an almost identical table 20 years ago that was stamped "Gillows", I believe that this one is also from their workshops in Lancaster.
This refined and elegant table is ready to grace your space.
