A very rare and unusual late 17th century Irish William & Mary period oak inlaid marquetry chest on stand, Donegal, circa 1690.

The chest having a slightly overhanging top with a frieze of inlaid ebony below, to each side of the case is an inlaid floral panel of stained bone and a corresponding frieze of ebony below. To the center is a large single drawer with twin deeply raised panels that are inlaid with overlapping circular inlay of holly, the chest having brass teardrop pulls. To the center of the drawer is an ebony and bone marquetry inlaid panel to represent a great hall, with a checkered bone and ebony 'tiled' floor and holly inlay and bone to represent the beams & superstructure of the hall's ceiling.

The chest on stand comprises two parts, the chest is raised on the original substantial 'Barley Twist' stand which is joined with 'Barley Twist' stretchers, the chest on stand is of joined and pegged construction throughout.

Condition is very good indeed and has a mellow dark honey untouched surface, in fact condition is quite remarkable as this chest is almost 350 years old. The chest on stand was acquired in Ireland and by repute came from Donegal Castle.
