A good antique Italian baroque walnut inlaid chest or cassone, circa 1680.
The chest most likely Neapolitan having a hinged lid with the original hand-forged iron 'snipe' hinges, the chest is made from solid figured walnut and is inlaid with a number of exotic woods. The front of the chest has a shaped panel in relief surrounded by geometric inlay of ebony and lemon-wood and flanked by two columns of fruit wood chevron inlay, the front of the chest having canted sides and inlaid with geometric string inlay. The sides of the chest having recessed panels and the chest is raised on an ogee shaped stepped plinth, great color and patina built up over the last $350 years, traces of ancient ink stains to the top maybe from an Italian Baroque writer?
Condition is very good, the chest is robust and stable and could even be used as a seat or bench?
