"Sneeuwdag te Innsbruck" (Snowy Day in Innsbruck), Oil on Canvas by Johann Christoph Windhorst (Dutch, 1884-1970)

Johan Wallace (1884-1970) was born on 1 June 1884 in Schiedam as the son of a gin distiller. In the early twentieth century, he took over the distillery from his father, along with his brother. In 1917, he withdrew himself from the company to concentrate on his two great passions; painting and music. After he sold his part of the company to his brother, he ceased all contact with his family and focused completely on his painting. Because he had no formal art training, he took drawing and painting lessons from, among others, Frederika Broeksmit. The period up to 1935 can be considered as his apprenticeship, in which he mostly painted in an impressionistic style, making village views and mountain landscapes from Switzerland, southern France, and Italy. In the mid 1930s he came into contact with East Asian painting, which had a major impact on his work.
