An important 18th century Italian Old Master tempera on copper panel Baroque painting, "The Road to Emmaus", circa 1700.
The painting represents the early resurrection biblical story of Christ on the Road to Emmaus, when the disciple Cleopas (the brother of Saint Joseph) and one other unnamed disciple meets Jesus. This occurs on the day of the resurrection, the disciples had heard that Christ's tomb was found empty, when they encounter a stranger on the road and do not see that he is Jesus resurrected, when he later breaks bread with them "their eyes were opened" and they recognize the resurrected Jesus.
The painting is beautifully rendered on a copper panel and depicts Jesus with a gilded halo & wearing a blue robe whilst carrying a walking staff, he is flanked by the two disciples, to the background is a temple building.
The painting is in very good condition, it is housed in a gilded & velvet lined contemporary frame.
