Born in Amsterdam, Christiaan Karel Appel was a painter, sculptor and poet most notably known for being one of the founding fathers of the CoBrA movement in 1948. Before that, Appel studied at the Rijksakademie van Beelendene Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1940-1943 and had his first solo exhibition in 1946. With a style characterized by figurative abstract forms and bright expressive colors, he found inspiration from not only great artists such as Dubuffet and Picasso, but also from children. Appel’s works are presently held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
