A very good pair of antique Louis XV French carved walnut Provincial Salt (Saliero) and flour (Fariniere) boxes, circa 1870.
Each box is finely carved & both boxes have three turned finials to the back and each central finial having a carved 'sun' motif. The fariniere (used to store flour mainly for dusting fish) having a sliding door enclosing a storage area for flour. The door front carved with a pair of fish and a tied bow and other carved floral decoration with a carved flower basket to the top of the box.
The saliero (salt box) also having carved floral decoration & a sloped hinged lid encloding a storage area for salt, below is a small drawer carved with a pair of fish and above carved wheatsheaves tied with a bow.
Both boxes are raised on curled cabriole legs and terminate to zoomorphic hoof feet. It is not common to find an original true pair of such boxes as one very often becomes separated from the other.
Condition is very good indeed, no damage or restoration, beautifully carved and both boxes with a rich mellow patina.
