A very early Victorian sterling silver gilt viniagrette by Francis Clarke, Birmingham, 1841.
This very nice vinaigrette is in fine condition with an engine turned top, engraved with a shield shaped vacant cartouche (no monogram),the back of the case also with 'rope-twist' engine turned decoration. The hinged lid with a floral clasp enclosing an interior engraved gilt hinged cover, to receive a sponge that would hold a fragrance as an antidote to the foul smells of the streets of the early 19th century. The vinagrette with hallmarks to the interior of the lid and the interior of the base, with the marks for Francis Clarke and Birmingham with the date letter "S" for 1841.
Silver weight is 18 Grams, condition is fine.
