A fine antique engraved sterling silver vinaigrette, Edward Smith, Birmingham, 1839.
The vinaigrette is finely engine turned to the hinged top and the undersaide, the lid is monogramed engraved with "J.A. to E.C." The outline of the vinaigrette is shaped and engraved, the gilt interior having a hinged engraved & pierced cover. The case is hallmarked both on the inside of the lid and the base, with the anchor mark for Birmingham and the date letter "Q" for 1839 and Edward Smith's marks.
Smith was well known for making fine quality vinaigrettes, in a time when the city streets were putrid smelling a vinaigreete would offer aromatic relief with a sponge in the base with fragrant oils to place under the nose.
Condition is very good, silver weight 25 Grams.
