A fine antique German sterling silver & enamel miniature icon of the Virgin Mary, circa 1860.
The icon is a rendition of the so-called "Mattheiser Gnadenbild" ( Miraculous image) a painting by an unknown artist & dating around 1700, depicting the pregnant Virgin Mary. The painting is housed in the St. Matthias basilica, Trier, Germany, a church dating from the 5th century. The well-known painting is responsible for many of Marian pilgrimages to St. Matthias basilica every year.
The icon is very finely hand-painted with enamel on a gold enameled ground, the virgin is depicted with a halo and wearing a blue and gold robe and adorned with pearls, she is flanked by calligraphy abbreviations in black script. The arched icon having twin gothic arch doors that latch when closed, the doors with engraved decoration to the front & rear, the icon is raised upon an oval black enameled base.
This very fine antique miniature icon is in excellent condition, no damage or restoration. This very beautiful icon is ready to grace your space.
