A very good pair of antique 17th century Spanish blue & white pottery albarelli or apothecary jars, circa 1680.
From the 15th century onward cylindrical drug jars like this were used throughout Europe & Islamic countries in North Africa & the Near East, they were used for medicines and herbal remedies.
This late 1600s pair of Spanish albarelli are of cylindrical waisted form and having a wide slightly flared mouth, each jar with a raised circular foot. Both jars are decorated with a blue scrolling floral design and each jar having a hand-painted with the Latin name of the contents.
There are the usual expected abrasions to the glaze and other little idiosyncrasies, but the albarelli are in otherwise solid condition, a fine pair of 350 year old antique apothecary jars.
