A wonderful large antique Wedgwood Fairyland lustre octagonal porcelain bowl circa 1920.
The bowl is decorated in 'castle on a road' design, on a mother of pearl ground to the exterior. The octagonal panels are framed with the gilded 'cobble' border. The 'Boxing match' design on a mother of pearl ground to the interior. The bowl with the 'Portland Vase' and 'WEDGWOOD ENGLAND' back stamp to the underside with pattern number 'Z5125'.
The bowl is of large size with a captivating iridescent lustre glaze, the bowl may have been a second from the Wedgwood factory or some incredibly adept professional repair was possibly undertaken? However this is unlikely, as the bowl rings when flicked with one's finger, if it was damaged it would provide a dull tone.
The bowl seems to be in very good condition and makes for an impressive display, other such bowls are listed online for up to $10,000.
Fairyland Lustre was an incredibly sophisicated collection of high-end ceramic tableware created by artist Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood, first introduced in 1915. The line featured fantasy landscapes and magical creatures decorated with vibrant, jewel-like colors and iridescent, metallic glazes. Inspired by fairy tales, children's books, and Oriental porcelain, the pieces were expensive to produce but were highly successful and sought after throughout the 1920s. Makeig-Jones was asked to retire from Wedgwood in 1931, and the line eventually declined due to its high cost and the Great Depression.
