A fine pair of antique 19th Century Chinese Ming style carved, lacquered & gilt throne armchairs, Qing dynasty, circa 1860.
This very attractive pair of antique carved Chinese throne chairs are made from Chinese elm, with traces of red lacquer decoration, they have carved & pierced headrests, the chair backs are carved with inter-connecting organic curled sections. The seat back having carved panels with traces of gilding and decorated with Imperial figures in landscapes with prunus trees, a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture. There is a second corresponding pierced carved panel below, the arms with curled decoration matching the chair back. Raised on four legs with scrolled feet and joined by four plain stretchers, these very elegant chairs are comfortable & very sturdy, they are in excellent condition and ready to grace your space.
The chairs were acquired in China around the time of the Boxer Rebellion circa 1899 and were brought back to the United States by a family of diplomats and have passed by descent since then.
