A fine antique Scottish Renaissance Revival carved oak server/ buffet, circa 1860.
This sumptuously carved buffet with a carved back crest (removeable) having a central scrolled cartouche with a lions head & surrounded with carved foliate. The top has a carved gadrooned edge with two drawers below with 'Green Man' carved handles & carved fruit to either side. The Green Man as a motif has it roots in the medieval period of the 12th century & such images appeared as architectural carvings on churches & castles, the face surrounded by leaves & foliage, the image is symbolic of rebirth and the cycle of new growth.
The top is supported by a pair of ribbed & tapering columns with carved balls to the top, the base with an arched arcaded frieze & a pair of paneled doors below each door carved with a lion's head, plenty of room for storage! To each side of the doors are columns of carved fruits that are surmounted with a pair of corresponding carved Green Man heads. The buffet is raised on a gadrooned plinth base. Condition is very good indeed, whether used as a drinks or wine cabinet, a server or buffet or for whatever purpose, this fine buffet is ready to grace your home.
Provenance; From a fine country house in Aberdeen, Scotland.
