A very fine antique Japanese Meiji period marquetry (Yosegi Zaiku) cabinet/etagere cabinet (Shadona), circa 1880.

The cabinet of unusually large size; as many of these cabinets are much smaller and often this style of Japanese marquetry was used on smaller objects such as puzzle boxes and table top cabinets. The cabinet is made of Japanese elm (Keyaki) and is inlaid with many specimen woods such as; Mulberry, spindle tree wood, Katsura tree, Camphor wood, Japanese cucumber tree and a host of other woods.

The top of the cabinet having a pagoda shaped shelf below are a series of doors and drawers, 20 doors and nine drawers, the cabinet is in two sections with a plinth base with shaped bracket feet. The top of the cabinet having two 'wings' or hinged cabinets that can be opened by rotating them 90 degrees. The cabinet is lavishly inlaid with geometric marquetry throughout, all of the surfaces are decorated with inlay.

Condition is remarkable, no losses or damage, an incredibly fine Meiji period Yosegi Zaiku shadona.
