A fine antique mid 19th century Anglo-Ceylonese specimen wood carved & inlaid ebony occasional table, circa 1850.
The table top of octagonal form having a deeply carved edge with a floral design, the table top with segmented radial quadrants of exotic specimen woods. The specimen panels are separated with chevron inlay of ebony & ivory inset into silver wire borders, below is a cushion moulded frieze, with a locking frieze drawer (key is present), on lotus leaf and double C scroll supports. The table is raised on a quadripartite leaf carved platform base with scrolled feet, this exquisite table is in remarkably excellent condition.
The use of specimen woods as a decorative feature in furniture of this type was distinctive to Galle District of Ceylon, this table exhibits all the very best characteristics of the Galle District craftsmen of the 19th century, using the enviable supply of native tropical timbers.
The table is made from materials now rightly protected by the (CITES) convention on endangered species, as this table is of an antquarian natutre Bloomsbury will procure a CITES licence if the table is to be shipped ouitside of the United States.
