A good antique English oak coffer/mule chest from the Reign of King George I (1698-1727), the chest circa 1720.
The plank top above a three-panelled trunk, the top rail inscribed with the initials "I. M.", above two drawers with brass bail handles, the handles are most likely late 18th century replacements. The chest is of period joined, dowelled & pegged construction, the chest has its original functioning lock & key. The chest is raised on the original full height stile feet, very often the feet are reduced as these chests would have stood on cobbled floors and washed down with water causing the feet to rot. The interior of the chest is lined with hand printed wall paper from the early 1800s, this can be easily removed if you so desire, Bloomsbury did not remove it as it is part of the chest's history.
The chest is in very good original condition, very often such plain early 18th century chests were later carved in the Victorian period, by middle class ladies & gentlemen, this chest is very honest and simple, and remains untouched.
