Antique American Oil on Canvas Landscape by Cordelia Kuemmel (1863-1938), 1888.
Cornelia A. Kuemmel, the daughter of German immigrant parents in Glasgow, Missouri, might have had a distinguished career had her parents given her the opportunities she needed. After teaching at Pritchert College, Glasgow, in 1884-1885, she studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, Washington University, from which she graduated with the opportunity offered her for further study in the east. However, her family insisted that she return to Glasgow, where she lived in a lonely world of her own, painting works of surprising beauty with almost desperate determination until her later years. Miss Kuemmel's painting, "Glasgow, Missouri," is illustrated in MISSISSIPPI PANORAMA (St. Louis:City Art Museum of St. Louis,1949),p.97. It is owned by the State Historical Society of Missouri, Columbia.
A sensitively painted landscape scene with river painted by C.A. Kuemmel in 1888, certainly depicting a scene in Missouri, most likely Glasgow. Signed and dated lower left.
