A Large & Important Italian Renaissance oil on canvas, an allegorical scene attributed to the Flemish/Italian artist Jan Van Der Straet (b. Bruges 1523 d. Florence 1605), known in Italy as Giovanni Stradano. The painting circa 1580.


The work depicting an allegory of the arts; with Philosophy, literature, sculpture and painting represented, with the Roman god Mercury standing aloft. To the background is a procession of city officials some on horseback amidst grand buildings in a Florentine square, to the far background are boats on the banks of the Arno river.


An engraving based on this painting was produced in 1596 by the German/Dutch engraver, Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1617) , this engraving is housed in the Wellcome Collection Museum, located in London, United Kingdom.


The painting is large in size and almost square as it sits in an 18th century gilded pine and composition frame. Condition is very good, no condition issues or significant restoration. Jan Van Der Straet's works rarely come onto the market. A rare and important investment quality painting from the later part of the Italian Renaissance.
