A good antique George III English sterling silver gilt vinaigrette, William Pemberton, Birmingham, 1787.
The box with a hinged lid having an elongated raised octagonal cartouche, which is free from a monogram or name, the borders are deeply engraved with lozenge decoration and foliate engraving to each corner. The lid having hallmarks to the underside and encloses a silver gilt interior hinged filigree lid that would have received a fragrant sponge allowing the owner to enjoy a pleasant smell rather than the fetid aroma of Georgian London. The underside and edges of the box also having engraved decoration, the interior base is stamped with a full set of hallmarks; " SP " for Samuel Pemberton, the anchor for Birmingham and the letter "P" for 1787 and the head of King George III. Condition is excellent, the box opens with ease and the hinge closes tight, silver weight is 18 grams.
