A fine English George III Regency period mahogany secretary/bureau bookcase, signed "J. Ashton Northampton", circa 1820. Made of the very finest solid Cuban mahogany (now extinct), the bookcase secretary in two parts, the top having a twin arched pediment with a central Neo-Classical urn shaped finial to the center and dentil molding below. The bookcase with twin astragal glazed doors enclosing two adjustable shelves. The base having a locking fall front enclosing a series of pigeon holes and drawers with a central locking door, the fall front writing surface is supported by two pull-out lopers. Below are four graduated drawers with the original brass handles and escutcheons, the secretary is raised on shaped bracket feet. One of the top drawers having the Cabinet maker's stamp for John Ashton of Northampton, who was active from 1795 to 1830 with workshops on both Gold Street and Bridge Street Northampton. A fine antique documentary bureau bookcase in remarkable original condition.
