A rare Greco-Bactrian alabaster carving of a Hippocampus (Hippocamp) from antiquity, Central Asia or Afghanistan, circa 200 BCE.
Finely carved from banded alabaster as a hippocampus head; from Greek mythology a creature that had a horse's head and the body of a fish. Bactria being the ancient name for the Eastern outpost of ancient Greece, it encompassed parts of Central Asia, Afghanistan and reached to the outer edges of Persia and India. The carving is in good condition and is mounted on powder coated black steel stand, from a prominent British collection of antiquities.
