An ancient Khurasan silver and copper inlaid bronze inkwell, Eastern Persia or Herat, 12th-13th century, from an important private Middle East collection.
The inkwell is of cylindrical shape with a domed shaped lid with dot shaped silver and copper inlay in a stylized floral form, the lid having a knop shaped finial. Both the lid and base having engraved cartouches inlaid with silver calligraphic inscriptions. The base has corresponding stylized floral silver dot inlay and calligraphy, with three hinged handles (one possibly a later replacement) and a band of inlaid silver 'ropework' design to the base.
Condition is good, a very similar inkwell is housed in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, see also a similar inkwell in the David Collection, Copenhagen. From a prominent Middle East collection.
